Welcome to the “Gifted and Talented Young Pakistani Scholarship in Mathematics” program, something I have been thinking for over a decade. And as the writer Victor Hugo said “nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time has come” and so for me and for this Scholarship program the time has come.

Like many of you I am a big cricket fan and I have had the good fortune to have seen the Pakistan cricket team in action. There are many exceptionally gifted and talented Pakistani cricketeers. However, just imagine for a minute the horrible thought that cricket was not played in Pakistan. Then none of that talent would ever be developed or discovered. We would never have an opportunity to see cricketing geniuses like Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Akhtar or our very own cricketing Prime Minister Imran Khan. What a loss that would be!

And that is exactly what is happening in mathematics in Pakistan. Among the millions of primary and secondary school students there is enormous talent. And among this are a few gems of very exceptional ability waiting to be discovered. That is exactly what the “Gifted & Talented Young Pakistani Scholarship in Mathematics” endeavors to achieve. We want to identify and nourish such gems.

We cannot do this alone and we need your help. Help in identifying young students, help in assessing them, help in developing them and help in guiding them to become exceptional mathematicians. This is a generational effort and we start here and know. We are starting with scholarships in mathematics but over time as we find our way, we will offer scholarships in other subjects. However, our focus will always be on my passion of mathematics and the physical sciences.
